Vaginismus
Vaginismus is a condition that many have not heard of. It affects between 1-17% of people with vaginas. Estimates vary so widely due to underreporting and underdiagnosis. Vaginismus is a condition in which the muscles of the vagina contract involuntarily. This can cause difficulty and pain during penetrative sex, the use of tampons or necessary medical examinations.
Causes of Vaginismus can include trauma, medical conditions such as UTI’s and skin conditions, fear of pain or pregnancy, perceptions of sex and cultural beliefs.
Vaginismus can lead to a loss of interest or anxiety surrounding sex, problems conceiving and avoidance of gynaecological exams. The condition often leaves people feeling embarrassed, alone and frustrated. Due to the nature of vaginismus, many people don’t feel comfortable seeking treatment and continue living with the condition which can affect self-esteem, relationships and mental health.
Psycho-sexual therapy can benefit those with vaginismus. Techniques in mindfulness and exploration of the causes can help reduce symptoms while the support of a professional can assist you in working with feelings of isolation and frustration.
