Experiences from our team

GP Dr Jenny Geraghty shares her experience working as a Rural GP

“I came to Dubbo with my husband Tony and 2 young daughters when Tony was invited to join an Obstetrics and Gynaecology practice. I had grown up in Newcastle and went to uni in Sydney, while Tony is a Brisbane boy. We have had no regrets about our decision to move here.

All four of our children went through school in Dubbo and have done very well. Two have followed in the family footsteps, one as a doctor, and another as a nursing graduate. One daughter is a Sydney graduate in Arts/Media and Communication, and our youngest son is doing a masters degree in environmental science. They have definitely not missed out on anything growing up regionally!

Life for a family is good here. The town allowed us to give our children a degree of freedom and independence that we may not have permitted in a city.

Naturally Tony had a very busy professional life and we always thought how lucky he was to get to the hospital in 5 minutes, sometimes quicker, when he was needed. He has retired now and is loving cycling, Pilates, and bread making.

My own career has transformed from 2 days/week when the family were younger, to a very rewarding mix of general practice, university teaching at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo, and VMO palliative care at Lourdes Hospital.

I feel very fortunate to be a GP and to have a role in caring for the community of Dubbo and the surrounding areas.

I feel very fortunate to live in Dubbo!”
